SB-900承繼前身SB-800的優越設計，是一支高效能的閃光燈。SB-900的設計重點在於它的實用功能，特別在配合尼康數位單眼相機使用創意閃光系統，它提供17-200mm的自動變焦範圍(較SB-800的24-105mm範圍寬寬)，3個照明模式， 新的外型設計，流線型的操作及LCD資訊屏，AF輔助照明支援新一代的自動對焦感應器。

SB-900的改良加速電子線路提供了高速回電時間。另外，可透過尼康數位單眼相機更新軔體(全球首創*)，確保閃光燈能更新新技術。當配合尼康數位單眼相機使用，SB-900成為創意閃光系統的核心，它可於無線閃光系統中擔任主控燈或遙控燈，帶領攝影師探索更多創意的機會。
